Leaving Your Job the Right Way

By Ginny Clarke

Have you ever felt like leaving your job with a mic-drop moment? Trust me, I’ve been there. But let’s face it, a dramatic exit might feel good for a moment, but it’s like eating too much candy – regret follows swiftly.

Let’s talk about leaving your job the right way – the way that keeps doors open and relationships strong. Here are three nuggets of wisdom I’ve picked up along the way:

1. The Two-Week Tango:  When you’re dancing out of a job, remember the two-week rule. Give your employer enough notice (usually two weeks, but check your contract). This isn’t just about being nice; it’s about being smart. A classy exit leaves a lasting impression.

2. Stay Cool Under Fire: If you’re being let go, keep your cool. Avoid the temptation to say things you might regret later Instead, ask for feedback, review your severance package, and walk out with your head held high.

3. Transition Like a Pro: Whether you’re leaving for a new gig or being shown the door, how you handle the transition speaks volumes. Help with training your replacement, document your responsibilities, and leave a roadmap for those who follow.

And here’s the best part – I’m saying more on this topic in this week’s video. Watch this video for more insights on how to leave your mark (the right way) as you exit. You’ll thank me later when you’re soaring high in your new career without any baggage from the past.
