Ohio University senior Melaina Lewis was selected by PRSSA judges as the top student mentor of 2014, and I enjoyed presenting the “Culpwrit” scholarship to her at last night’s awards ceremony and dinner in Washington, D.C.

Melaina was nominated by one of her many mentees, Jessica Carnprobst, who credits Melaina with helping her decide to pursue a career in public relations. “Melaina didn’t force her point of view on me, but over time she simply asked the right questions that helped me make up my own mind about my future career.”

Active in her PRSSA chapter in Athens, Ohio, Melaina plays a key role with ImPRessions, the student-run agency at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. Melaina also is engaged in student government and other campus activities.

I enjoyed meeting Melaina, Jessica and the other Ohio Bobcats. They represented their university well, and they further solidified my belief that the future of our profession will be in good hands.
